The Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics

Curiosity fuels motivation to explore and learn. Our own backyard is the best place to start! Are you curious? Want to explore and learn? You are at the right place! The Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics will guide you to be a citizen scientist!

Welcome to the world of citizen science!

At its core, Citizen Science is a collaborative effort between the general public and scientific community to improve scientific endeavours, increase scientific literacy, support education, and better address societal needs through scientific evidence. By participating in citizen science, you can contribute to scientific research while expanding your knowledge and making a meaningful impact. Meanwhile, researchers can utilize this powerful tool to gather diverse data and insights from a widespread network of participants, enabling them to study various areas of science, from climate change to wildlife populations. Whether you are a student, a retiree, or just someone with a curious mind, there is a citizen science project out there for you.

So, what are you waiting for? Get involved in citizen science today and be a part of this growing movement that's making a real difference in the world of science!

What is Citizen Science
Citizen Science In India

Citizen Science in India

Citizen Science is gaining rapid popularity in India due to the increasing acceptance and access to digital and mobile technologies to youth. On the other hand, we lack robust and long-term data on biodiversity, environment and similar fields to develop evidence-based policies. Our country is at a point where scientific solutions have to be sorted out for issues such as biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, disease outbreaks, climate change, etc, before it is too late. It is high time that we as citizens, channel our scientific temper in the right direction, bringing out a collective effort to make the world a better place. Explore some interesting Citizen Science projects from India.

Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics

In a biodiversity-rich country like ours, citizens have considerable potential to contribute to long-term environmental monitoring, regulation and decision-making. Training students and the general public to participate in scientific research is the best way to do so. To catalyse this idea, the KSCSTE-Kerala Forest Research Institute established the Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics (CCSBI). We envision carving out a knowledgeable society of citizen scientists through outreach and capacity building, and to generate quality biodiversity and environment data for conservation, management and sustainable use.

Join the Growing CitSci Network

Becoming a Citizen Scientist is incredibly easy and can be done from the comfort of your own backyard. All you need to do is create an account on Citizen Science platforms (eg.: iNaturalist, eBird, GLOBE Observer ) or explore specific project websites and apps. Once you have your account, you can start exploring your surroundings and making observations of the various species or the interactions you encounter. You can take photos or audio and upload them to the platforms, where the community can help you identify and classify your observations.

Want to learn more about Citizen Science and how to get involved? We've got you covered! From participating in existing projects to creating your own, we will provide you with the resources and information you need to make a meaningful impact by using your free time!

Visit our Projects and Resources pages for more information on how to get started. Let's work together to advance our knowledge and help protect our environment!
